Both of us felt that we just weren't playing enough to play level 1. We recruited Kyle Fiolka and Kyle Porter from Bankers and Vicrum Vaidya from our level 5 team. We weren't sure how we would do, but we won level 2, beating bankers hall in the finals. I made the decision to not move up to level 1. So we played level 2 again the 2015-16 season...again we won. We beat the Winterclub 5-0 in the finals. I probably won't ever forget my finals match against Alex Moir who had an 18-0 record going into the finals. And 4 of those wins were against me, plus he had played me once the year before and won that match as well.

So Alex was by far the best player at level 2. I had lost to him twice at level 1 and twice at level 2. Every game in every match was close and we both know we have to work really hard if we wanna win. Alex has a lot of weapons, a 6'3" frame with huge reach, great volley skills, a quick hold and snap in the front and he's played as a junior so,has great technique. But in the finals, I had nothing to lose, my team all expected us to win 4-1 (me being the 1) and let me play first so I wouldn't have any pressure. Our team had really come together and having the support of your teammates is really difficult to find. The first game I felt like I was playing well but lost 15-4. I remember coming off court and my team shaking my giant cardboard head at me telling me I was playing awesome, moving awesome, but I needed to lift lob 2" higher and that would change everything. So that's what I did. Games 2 and 3, everything changed, now suddenly, Alex wasn't able to volley. Sure he had lots of time at the back, but now I wasn't having to play off balance. I was able to get to middle and have him play out of the corner. It was still long rallies, but I wasn't scrambling and with the extra time, I could start dictating play. I won 15-11, 15-12. Game 4, Alex changed it up and started striking the ball with more pace and forcing me to contend with hard hitting length and surprise boasts and drops. He caught me off guard and won 15-5. Both of us were exhausted going into the fifth. The crowd had gathered behind our court and the cheering was awesome. My team told me what I always tell them

"straight, straight, straight...and when you get a loose ball...hit the right shot."

Game 5- Alex was finding it tough to move forward to volley and letting me force him into the back. His shots were still coming at me hard but I started to play boring patient slow tight straight length, waiting for him to hit loose. And when I got him behind me, I hit a boast get him scrambling to the front. I kept the strategy simple, and I got to 14-12. I was up 14-12 and after a long exchange of backhand straight length, I stepped in to volleyboast, Alex dove into the front and looked like he was going hard cross but framed the ball... It spun up and I had to sprint forward but couldn't get to his mishit winner. At 14-13, the point was identical, but this time, I set up the volleyboast, again Alex dove, but was able to get under and lob the ball. I was looking for the drop so I doubled back and jumped up with a swinging overhead backhand, this time I framed the ball and it spun into the opposite front corner, Alex dove across the front of the court and ripped the ball cross court while I was still recovering from my desperation shot. I had barely even turned around before Alex blasted

The ball off the front wall cross court, unfortunately for Alex, the ball just grazed his shoulder and I had won the match. The rest of the team won as well. Everything was going great, but after that...

I lost my job, spent the spring and summer golfing in Europe, injured my elbow, got a cortisone shot. Strained my knee badly. Spent most of sept to November coaching volleyball at centennial high school where my brother teaches (made it to dig 1 city finals) but pretty much not playing squash.

Fast forward to 2016-17 season. Again Derek and had to recruit a new team to play level 1. We merged with the fit plus team, and added Danielle Letourneau. Our team hasn't really meshed yet, and I played my first match in December, then played the Banff tourney in January. It was not good, actually it was ugly.

So 2 weeks ago, I reset, like I've done so many times before. I focused on my racket prep and my footwork. And reminded myself that working hard is why I play. I registered for the AB Closed. My inactivity had dropped my ranking out of the top 100, but I somehow qualified to play men's A. Every match was a battle, and I loved every second of it. The semifinal, I clawed back from 0-2 down and found a new gear, picking up my level of play. The banquet night made it difficult to play in the finals, but I still played one of the longest matches of my life, losing 3-2 to an up and coming junior.

Anyhow, to sum it all up, again, I've strained my knee and my elbow, but after a little recovery time, I'll be back with a lot more energy and looking forward to more time on court.

The 2015 squash season started out promising. My first match
I subbed for the Men’s Level 1 team and played a tough 5 games against a very
skilled opponent. I lost, but it was close and I played pretty good.

The following week, I played my first league match at Level
2 against another top player and I was shocked that I was able to compete as
Craig is a more skilled and fitter player than me. I went point for point with
Craig in the first, but the pace was just too much and I slowed down enough for
him to run away with it at 9-9, losing 15-9. The second game I told myself I
couldn’t beat him at the back so I had to step up and volley and force him to
try and hit it past me, I won 15-4. The next game was more of the same, but I
was getting gased and I couldn’t tell if he was getting tired. I could feel my
strategy of volleying short deteriorating as I was losing half a step and he
was getting the ball past me more, I won with a couple lucky nicks 15-12, but
the momentum was clearly swinging back into his favour. The fourth game, he
picked up the pace and I was just hanging on, I lost my drive to step up and
volley and he was burying me in the back and I was forced to lift the ball and
wasn’t applying any pressure but I was fortunate to keep rallies going long
enough that I could see he was getting tired too. He won 15-13 and I could see
that both of us were struggling. The fifth game was purely mental, rallies were
short and both of us were trying to end points too quickly, there was a lot of
over hitting and loose balls. I got to 14 first and on match ball I hit a loose
ball into the front backhand corner, he got on it early, I had pretty much
given up and he smashed it right into the tin. I was shocked, but came away
with the win.

The following week, I played the UofC tournament and felt
the expectation to win my division. I considered my toughest match to be my
first round against Todd. I had never beaten Todd and I was determined to play
as good as I could. Every game was close but I won 3-0.

Reflecting back on these 2 wins, I really had no expectation
to win, my focus was to play as good as I could and give these guys a match and
have a fun… sounds cliché, but these were two of the most fun matches I ever
played. I moved well, swung smoothly and didn’t worry about the outcome.

The match I played next I tried really hard to have fun, but
started to feel that my opponent was playing balls on the double bounce and
fishing for lets/strokes. It took away from the enjoyment of the game and I
found myself getting angry and spending way too much energy trying to look like
I wasn’t angry. Holding it in was sapping my energy and concentration. That
match went 5 and I lost badly in the 5th. This may have been the
start of my current slump.

I went on to play for 3rd place against one of my
training partners, but it was not a friendly match with lots of pushing and
complaining. I hated being on court and I could see that he was more frustrated
than I was. I really just tried to get thru it and won 3-1. I played well, but
it didn’t feel nice as my opponent was a poor sport, calling my ball down,
fishing for strokes and complaining about balls he hit out of bounds.

Next league match was against someone I absolutely despise
playing against. He is big, hits hard and low and initiates unnecesary contact,
it’s a very physical game against this guy and I really don’t enjoy it. It
brings out the worst in me. It doesn’t help when the referee doesn’t understand
how to call a stroke on someone who hits the ball back at himself or a no let
when they run into you and have no chance at getting to the ball. I lost in 4
and was mentally exhausted for days after this one. I really felt that with an
informed referee that a lot of this could be avoided. Another loss to feed the slump, the worst
part is the negative attitude that I can feel growing.

Subbed for level 3 the following week and played a guy I
hadn’t beaten before, but felt that I should win. It was right after thanksgiving
so I was feeling a sluggish and hoped he was feeling it too. I was striking the
ball well, but moving a slow and getting tired. I really did feel the pressure
to win as I was subbing down and started getting tight, making poor decisions, and
I kept thinking about losing. It was a mentally draining match in that I
couldn’t focus on just playing. I lost again in 5 and was so physically and
mentally drained afterwards I could barely think.

Next week, I had another shot at the first opponent I played
this year. I was excited, I felt great going in, but played terrible, I was
over excited. I couldn’t place the ball tight or deep, I was behind on every
point and struggled to apply any pressure. I got worked, scores were close but
lost 3-0. Definitely psyched myself out in this one, I was trying way too hard,
lost my composure and turned into a bash and dasher. Tried to tell myself that
my opponent just played way too good, but I can see that my court movement and
swing become tight and I overcompensate by doing all the wrong things.

Following week was more of the same. I went in thinking I
should win, but I’m playing badly so I’ll probly lose. It was an awful mindset
to be in, because I could feel it draining me before the match even started.
Rallies were short, and opponent bashed the shit out of the ball and I was not
hitting well and was moving slow. Lost 3-1 and came off court frustrated with
my performance.

OK, so this leads up to the whole point of this… I was in a
slump and I didn’t know what to do to get out of it.

Here’s what I came up with…

The impossible happens every day and becomes more possible
with what might seem like a very small step. The end might not be within sight
in the beginning, the road is long and there are wrong turns, detours, traps
and obstacles along the way. But the road to impossible is not never ending and
the road is only as challenging as you perceive it to be. If the road beats you
down, it’s because you let it. If the road exhausts you, demoralizes you,
brings you to the brink of insanity, it’s because the road is exactly what you
need it to be to reach the impossible. My impossible is to be an open level squash
player. Squash includes fitness, racket skill, mental toughness and devotion.
So my road to impossible must condition me to improve all of those things. The
road will tear me apart so that I can build myself back up stronger. The road
for me can end at anytime, and there have been times where I have quit, I’ve
stopped pursing the impossible, only to start again, renewed. But recently I’ve
realized that the road to impossible can be enjoyed. It can be more than a
gruelling day to day that may or may not change. I’ve chosen to enjoy my road,
to push myself so that the benefits are immediate. To appreciate the time I
have on the road, the training, the match play, the company of the people who
are travelling the road with me. There are no more expectations and no more
negative consequences. Whether I’m training or playing a match, it’s all the
same now, trusting in my skills, my body. I cannot rely on anyone else to coach
me, I must start to be my own coach, a super positive coach who pumps up my
tires and allows me to make mistakes and constantly gives me positive feedback.

Anyhow, people have suggested I get a sport psychologist,
but I don’t need anyone to tell me that I am awful to myself, I’m negative and
my attitude stinks. Being positive is the toughest thing to do when you feel
like everything is going wrong. Remembering that good decisions are made when
your mind is thinking positively, your body responds when your mind is in a
positive mindset. So how do I get myself to be more positive. That’s a question
that I think is very individual. But thinking about things that make you happy
is a good start. Like Julie Andrews in the sound of music, think a few of your
favorite things and then it wont feel so bad.

Almost immediately after writing the first half of this
post, I took action. Discussed with my coach, really put together a plan to
change what I do on court, physically and mentally. Step 1 was do the
fundamentals better. For me, that starts with court movement and racket
preparation.

Training a few days later, was all about racket preparation.
Exaggerating my racket prep to simulate doing a hadoken from Street fighter,
looking to have my racket prep so ready that I could volley everything. The
thought of racket prep has changed for me, because thinking racket prep was not
enough, it brought my racket up to where I thought was enough, the thought of
hadoken, brings my racket back to where I think a hadoken would start. The
result is my racket is way more ready, it feels excessive, but the reality is
that now I’m ready. The consistency is building, but there is still a lot of
effort once I’m under pressure. But the result is there, in my match the next
week, it took a bit to get going, losing the first game 5-15. But once I
figured out how to move forward with my racket ready, I was able to control my
re-drops and throw in great drives off loose balls. Footwork forwards was ok, but
I need to bend more in my legs and less from the upper part of my waist. The
following 3 games were close, but I was able to be consistent enough to squeak
out the second game and run away in the third and fourth games with my fitness.
Racket prep gives me precious time, time to see the ball, time to make the
right decisions and time to execute a better shot.

More training on racket preparation is key to building my
skill set and elevating my game. I felt like I’ve hit a plateau the last few
years but now I know that I can still improve. Training sessions have been
mainly focused on improving racket prep and conditioning my footwork movement
to the front court. I feel like I’m able to hit a much better ball lately and I
need to play more with this hadoken mindset so that my racket is ready. My most
recent match put me up against a player who was coming off a really big win
against an opponent I had lost to previously. I was nervous in warmup, playing
tall and lanky hard hitters is always tough. At the start of the first game, I
couldn’t believe how well I was hitting the ball. My opponent didn’t stand a
chance as I played precise shots that forced him to hit loose and tactically I
was able to keep him off balance. The second game was more of the same and I could
feel his energy dropping. In the third, I tried to finish him off too quickly,
making several mistakes early on. I still felt confident, coming back from
14-10 down to lose 16-14, but the momentum was clearly on my side and I won the
fourth 15-2.

More solo hitting and I can see that racket prep is allowing
me to really lead my swing with the butt end of my handle and control the
direction of the ball with more precision and less effort. I’ve got a
tournament this weekend and I am seeded number 1, my focus will be on early
racket prep and efficient court movement. Tactically, my basic game plan is
always the same. Starts with hitting a tight shot, then start to bury my
opponent behind me with tight length, step up to pick off anything loose with a
volley and be ready for the loose short ball to get on it early, and either
hold for a hard length or take it early for the re-drop. Really loose shots,
look to step back and open up the court and play the cut off boast or hard
cross court. But again, my focus must be on racket prep, it’s still too early
in my training to just swing, the muscle memory will eventually get there, but
I have to continue to exaggerate my hadoken so that it will become engrained in
my swing.

There are a couple people that I have been coaching lately
also, and it has become so obvious to me now how poor most people’s racket
preparation is. It has been awesome for me as I get to practice my racket prep
while helping them improve as well. The next steps for me will be to increase the
pressure of my training so that I can sustain a great hadoken while sprinting
around the court and getting exhausted.

I guess the gist of this post, is that several weeks ago, I
was playing well, feeling fit, but not winning. Losing 5 matches in a row is
demoralizing and it becomes inherently more difficult to find the motivation to
train and even play a match. I was lost and frustrated because I didn’t know if
I would ever win another match. I was agitated by my opponents behaviour on
court and considered just not caring anymore whether I won or lost, or played
well… it was becoming blah.

The change came from my coach, he never said it directly,
but he helped me to focus on the things that I could change. He addressed how I
deal with what my opponents do, people’s behaviour on court is not something I
should be looking to waste my energy on, it shouldn’t be something I lose my
focus over. The truth is, I will avoid playing people I don’t want to hit with.
It’s just not fun for me and that’s something I can control. The other things I
can control are my racket preparation and my footwork, 2 things that I am
currently working to improve. The focus is not on winning or fighting or
anything other than playing better squash… the results are merely an indication
of how much more I need to train.

On top of that I suffered a very serious groin injury that has made it very difficult for me to move without pain. 2014 didn't start out very well either, with all kinds of stresses and my grandma also passing away. Don't worry, I'm coping and I know that I need to keep moving. Like the song says "Ain't nothing gonna break my stride, ain't no one gonna hold me down, oh no, I've got to keep on moving!"

Well, it's Easter and that means new beginnings. So...

I've been doing physio for my hip and back trying to get it strong again so that I can play squash, but it seems that every time I play, the pain gets worse and my mobility post match is deteriorating. Sure I've had some decent matches this year, but for the most part, the frustration of playing through pain makes it almost impossible to have any fun while on court. Training has become close to non-existent with the exception of Monday night lessons that I have to be coerced into going to and the odd hit around that puts me in a world of hurt.

Well, it's not like I had any kind of great epiphany on life, I'm just tired of feeling shitty. So I've spent the last few weeks doing research. I totally get that there is this new wave, Deepak Chopra, Eckhart Tole, self help, metaphysical secret that people have been preaching for years now. I think that positive thinking is definitely more beneficial to my well being than feeling depressed and wishing for things to be different. But I don't think that reading about it, or listening to special sound waves while I sleep is the answer for me. So the first thing I need to do is come up with a plan for how to become happy again, and yup, it starts with me.

So going forward, I need to set some goals. These goals are going to be specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and time based. That's right, SMART goals! It sounds silly, but by setting these goals, I hope that I can keep track of my life and set myself on a path to becoming happier.

So in order to set goals, I need an objective. First, I want to be able to move without pain. So the research I've been doing is about movement. There are a handful of websites out there that attempting to revolutionize the way people think about fitness. It first caught my eye, when someone posted a video about this guy named Ido Portal. The guys seems super intense and hardcore, not someone that I think I could learn from. But his passionate quest to become a better mover really peaked my interest. It seems that he only does online consulting and only coaches people willing to pay to be verbally abused about being weak and lazy. I'm not sure of the background of the people making testaments to the Ido Portal method, but it seems that these people were already ninjas prior to Ido's tutelage. So I delved deeper into movement training.
I found websites called gymnasticbodies.com and goldmedalbodies.com and that's where I was somewhat inspired to start setting my goals to meet the objective of moving without pain, all of which have a deadline of May 31st, 2014.

My first goal to be able to sit comfortably in a squat position for 30 minutes.
My second goal is to be able to do 12 chin-ups in a row.
My third goal is to be able to hold a wall assisted handstand for 5 minutes.
My fourth goal is to be able to hold an unassisted handstand for 10 seconds.
My fifth goal is to be able to hold a back bridge for 1 minute.
My sixth goal is to be able to do 50 pushups in a row.
My seventh goal is to quit smoking cigarettes.
My eight goal is to be able to do a back hand spring.
My ninth goal is to play guitar for at least 15 minutes twice a day.
My tenth goal is to practice drawing for at least 3 hours a week.

So, I've put together a training schedule and I'm gonna keep a daily log in my little notebook, that I call the Secret book of secrets vol.8. I plan to track my progress to becoming pain free. I plan to update my goals at the end of May.

So here it is, first off, I've only ever played in two D level tournaments, both of which I lost both my matches and that was it. After taking a few lessons and winning the geologist tourney in the C division, I thought that the C division is where I should be, regardless of having never won a D tourney, maybe I jumped the gun on this and looking back, I may have done it differently.
At that point in my squash development, I had the opinion that playing up was the best way to improve and really push myself to play my best. And it was in playing C tourney's that I met now teammate Paul Adamiak. Paul had played as a junior, was incredibly fast and fit. I remember playing him at the Winter Club in a C tourney and pushing myself so hard that I could barely breathe (not much has changed playing Paul). Although Paul played from a very young age, he had commitments to his gymnastics and was still looking to refine his squash tecnique. I don't remember the score of the match, but I'm sure that I lost. But it was a glimpse into my future and it motivated me to really take squash seriously. At that same tournament, I watched Brad Steiner play on the show court against a young Dave Letourneau and couldn't believe what I was watching. This old guy played shots I had never seen before. Brad was a wizard with the racket, moving the ball from corner to corner, boasting off side walls, rolling out of nicks, he hit hard or he hit the ball so slow and high it looked like the ball would never come down. It was incredible, and within minutes of him coming off court, I was walking with him to the locker room, picking his brain. Brad said he saw some of my match and I could tell he was just trying to be polite, but said "you're a good athelete and if you keep practicing, you'll be playing with the big boys." or something funny like that. Brad is someone that I've always held in high regard, as a player and a person. There are few people in the world of squash who are as nice on court as they are off court as Brad Steiner and although I'm not there, I think everyone should be like Brad.
The transition from C to B was quick after meeting Kevin Doucet. Learning to hit the ball to length consistently is the biggest skill necessary to win at the C level and play at the B level. For anyone out there looking to just up from the C division, trust me. Length is your ticket outta there! Unfortunately, there is a huge paradigm shift from just being able to hit the ball and being able to hit the ball and put it where you want. When I first started playing squash matches, I always thought that hitting it hard and low or hitting a good drop shot was the way to win points. It wasn't until I realized that hitting it hard and low and hitting good drop shots wasn't that easy, and once I learned to set up loose shots with good tight length, thats when I could now start dictating play with low hard shots and easy drop shots. Learning to move an opponent around the court, is so much more important than playing a winning shot, cause if you can do that, that's when opponents get out of position, that's when mistakes are made, that's when winning starts happening. It's so easy to say this, but when
I'm on court, even now, I can get caught up in the bashing and dashing, but if I can keep my mind collected, the first goal is always to get my opponent into a corner and get myself into the middle.

Ok, so far I've met Paul, Trevor, Kevin and Derek. And having won a handful of C tourneys and playing a lot of C semifinals and consolation finals. That's when I moved up to the B division. In retrospect, I should have played more B division tournaments, but early success at B encouraged me and mayber I was capable of way more. I had won the geologist and the oilmens in the B division. and made the B final in 3 other tournaments, as well I beat Trevor in the B div at the Eau claire club championships(which I have on video - possibly the last time I ever beat Trevor). At the end of the season I took up running (which I will never promote to anyone). and then september rolled around and Trevor, Luke and I had recruited Derek and Daylan to play interclub with us at level 4. Paul was a bit wishy washy, but he ended up playing for us full time before the end of the season. This was the beginning of what has turned out to be our history in the making. Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-69047277095351272942012-09-03T20:50:00.000-07:002012-09-03T20:50:46.080-07:00Squash PoliticsAt the end of the 2011-2012 season, our team finished 7th out of 8 teams, finishing 16 points ahead of the 8th place team, and only 8 points separated the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th place teams from us.

During the season, we shot ourselves in the foot by accomodating other teams that could not field a full team on our scheduled night to play, likely giving up precious points. Lesson learned.

We had expected to be relegated back down to level 2, but only 1 team from level 2 had been slated to move up, so we had be given another chance to stay at level 1. But what we didn't know is that bow valley club had recruited so that they could field a team at level 1. It is notable that bow valley finished 6th at level 2, 14 points behind the 2nd place team that decided not to move up and 24 points behind the 1st place team.

Now it seems that instead of granting any team a free pass, it would make sense to allow a playoff between Eau Claire and bow valley to see who gets that final spot in level 1. Initially bow valley had suggested a playoff and subsequently rejected the playoff because of the stipulation that they would have to field a level 2 team. It seems that the majority of the recruited players could return to their previous teams at the winter club or glencoe or back to their level 2 team where they would likely be more competitive.

Sure, it sucks to get the short end of the stick. There is nothing fair about how this entire situation was handled and it sucks that the Calgary Interclub Squash League has f'd us over.

Unfortunately, we allow this to happen and we wonder why squash isn't ever going to be a sport widely accepted by the general public. Perhaps squash was never meant to leave the private clubs. I guess that's it.
5 years ago they restructured interclub and
removed the “A” level, and just went with numbers. On the Eau Claire Y’s top
team they had lost 2 key players with Andy moving back to England and Jim sailing
around the world. So Luke and I moved up to join Trevor, Dale and Guy at level
4(formerly level 3) interclub. This was an eye opening year, Dale and Guy were
so good, in my mind, everyone at level 4 was so good. I couldn’t even imagine
beating Dale or Guy. The ball always went where they wanted it to go. Even
Trevor couldn’t beat them, but at this point Trevor and I were pretty close in
our level of play. So Dale organized
everything at the Y and he had me helping him out. So I went and got my level 1
and 2 NCCP coaching certification. It was a couple weekend courses and that’s
when I met a handful of juniors who were amazing at squash including 14 or 15
year old Danielle Letourneau, Cale Williams, Erin Roberts and Emma Yong, and I did
my level 2 with Lisa Henderson from Red Deer, Matt Teel of Medicine Hat and
Thea Wilson Scorgie from Edmonton. All of these players were ridiculously good
at squash, at least much better than I was and I couldn’t even imagine how
early they started playing squash. Both sessions were run by Kevin Doucet, who
went through teaching the basics of squash. How could I teach this stuff, if I
couldn’t do it myself?

Going forward, Trevor and I were on the
same team now, and both playing tournaments, but we weren’t training together
and we certainly weren’t friends. I also met Derek for the first time at the
Talisman tourney. Also, I met the kid
that would eventually become a great friend and the really be the first person
to help me really improve, Ian Laycock. Ian was attending Mt.Royal and taking
geology courses, and John Cox a prof at Mt.Royal invited him to play in the geologists
tourney. Ian barely broke a sweat and demolished Dave Safton in the final, and
nobody in the tourney even understood how good this kid actually was. Ian
agreed to do an exhibition match with Paul Oppenhiem at the Y in our year end
tourney. And that year, I was taking lessons with Ian, Paul and Derek under the
guidance of Kevin Doucet. Also attending lessons with us was Alex Paisley,
Brendan Pruden and a bunch of other guys. I remember being so intimidated by
how good everyone was, how hard they hit, how fast they moved and how young
they were. I was the old guy at 27 years old. That interclub season would be
Dale and Guy’s last, Dale going off to get married and Guy taking time off due
to health conditions. But we went out on a high, winning the season and the
playoffs.
Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-54888385550898726372012-05-14T14:02:00.001-07:002012-05-14T14:02:20.216-07:00The History of Eau Claire Men's Squash - cont'dPart 2 – The Development Years
September - 7 years ago was the start of my development
years, I started my first full year of interclub, playing on Eau Claire’s level
9(now level 10) team with Wes Mah, Ali Rawji and Randy Emmons. This is when I
first met Trevor, who was playing level 6 on his dad’s team. I never played Trevor that year and we weren’t
friends at this point. Anyhow, 12 months after only scoring 6 points in a
tournament, I had many more matches under my belt (some of them wins), I had a
better understanding of what I was trying to do and I wasn’t as much of a
danger to my opponents(or myself). So first round of the geologist tourney was against
Al Rutherford… I don’t remember the score, but I know that I won and Al couldn’t
believe it, he kept raving about how much I’d improved, and he still does. I
didn’t know it at the time, but his little brother Dan was one of the top players
in Canada and played Ivy League squash for Princeton, so Al had seen good
squash and he told me that he’d never seen someone improve as quickly as me,
which looking back, was such a nice compliment. Round 2, I was up against Chris May, and all I
could think about was how he kicked the crap out of me last year. This was one
of the most intense matches I ever remember playing in my life and I remember
being so exhausted and hitting a hard cross-court that rolled out of the nick
to win 10-9 in the fifth. And although I had beaten the 2 guys that demolished
me last year, my goal was to win the tournament. In the finals I played Brett Norris, who was a
bit of a sore loser, having lost the match on a stroke and arguing with the
ref, then giving me a cold fish of a handshake (People are so intense!) But Wow
for me, after a year of hard work, I had actually achieved a goal…time for new
goals. I also won the Oilmen’s in the C div that year.

6 years ago, I was called up to play level 5(now level 6)
interclub with Kelvin Paul, John Gamma, Luke Vanderbaaren and Stephen Murray, I
can’t remember how we did, but I went from playing as a substitute in the 4
spot at the beginning of the season to playing
regularly in the top spot. Trevor
was now playing playing level 3(now level 4) with the top team at the Y with
Jim(my boss), Dale, Andy and another guy who I can’t remember. This year, I
drove up to Edmonton and played a handful of C tourneys and won. I didn’t know
anyone up there, but everyone was so nice, and it was my first glimpse of Pro
Squash, watching Matthew Giuffre dismantle everyone. I was still getting lessons with Ken, who
taught me the importance of footwork, volleying, lobs, drop shots, ie. the
fundamentals. But Ken once asked me how far I wanted to go and I said “I wanted
to be as good as Matt Giuffre”, he said I’d never get there and (although it’s
true) that’s when I decided I needed a coach who was as delusional as I was.
Carol Vallee and Bryan Niblock were the volunteer coaches at the Y, and
although I could compete with them both, they taught me a bunch of stuff that
helped me improve. I had a winning record that year and I entered the B
division this year at the geologists tourney and won. I went on to play the
oilmen’s playing Women’s racketball world champion Christy Van Hees, who
demolished me in the Men’s B division. Hmmm back to the drawing board…

There are currently 7 of us on the Eau Claire Y men’s Level
1 team, including myself, Trevor Slaughter, Derek Shtand, Paul Adamiak, Ciaran
Godfrey, Andrew Gilbert and of course our coach Kevin Doucet. It appears that after
the few years we’ve played together, our improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed by
many other squash players in Calgary at all levels, at many other clubs. From
the outside looking in, we appear that we’re the best of friends(which we are)
and have been playing together forever(which it feels like). But the fact is we
didn’t just come together one day and decide to play squash. Each of us has a
story and each of us brings something different to the table. We all love to
play squash and we all have a unique approach to how we play the game. So here’s my(our) squash story, a bit of a
re-cap of how the team has come together, at least, it’s how I remember things,
how we have improved together and how we continue to stay motivated as a team.

Very well, where to do I begin. Prior to 2002, I had played
a handful of squash matches with the same 5 guys from university; Murray Allan,
Mike Crawford, Rob Langen, Andrew Bird and Garnet Knopp. I had never done a
drill, I had never had a lesson and I didn’t know anyone who played real squash.
In fact, I had never even seen good squash and I didn’t know anything about it.
I do remember walking through the university courts about 10 years ago and
watching Kyle Doenz doing a figure 8. I couldn’t even comprehend what I had
just seen.

So, in my third year of university I started
playing squash with my classmates in December and by January we all entered the
geologist’s squash tourney. None of us had played a squash tournament before,
but it was free food, free drinks and free for students, we couldn’t go wrong.
I entered the E division and played Mike, then some guy named Lou, then I
played Rob in the final to win the first squash tournament I had ever entered.
I still have the trophy(beer mug), with “Men’s E division Champion” engraved on
it. I didn’t play that much squash after that until the next year, when we all
entered the tourney again and I lost my 2 matches in the D division. Following that, I didn’t play much squash for
about 3 years. At this point, I hadn’t caught the squash bug yet, but for some
reason, I still remember thinking that I was pretty awesome.

Over those first few years out of university, I hit the
squash ball around a few times with my buddy Davin Wine, in fact I thought I
was pretty good, having won an E division championship back when I was in
school. But then 8 years ago, by serendipity, I got a job working downtown in Calgary.
One of my bosses, Jim Kelly was a level 3(high B) squash player, this was back
in the day when the top interclub level was “A”, then levels 1 to 12. I told
Jim that I was pretty good, so he took me to the Y to play squash and proceeded
to kick the crap out of me. What the
hell? How could someone so old, be so good? It was embarrassing, Jim got to the
point where he just gave me a lesson on boast-drive. A few weeks later, Jim
recommended I play the geologist tournament again and I did. Jim figured that I
was a C player, (I realize now that he was just being nice) so I played my
first C tournament where I scored a total of 6 points in 2 matches, talk about
demoralizing! But I will never forget losing 9-2, 9-1, 9-0 to Chris May, then
losing 9-1, 9-1, 9-1 to Al Rutherford. That’s when I set my first squash goal –
to come back next year and win the C division in geologist’s tourney.
At the tourney, I met Darren Tisdale and Terry McCallum, (who
knew Jim from the Eau Claire Y). One of their teammates was injured, so they
asked me to sub for their interclub team. I played 4 times and played a round
of playoffs for the Eau Claire Y Men’s level 11(it would be level 12 now) team.
That year I also joined a box league and
played in the oilmen’s squash tournament. Looking back, I thought I was so
good, but I was so terrible that I actually had to get stitches on my eyelid, I
got a concussion and had countless welts on my legs, back, arms and had injured
several people with my wild swing.

I met 4 other people at the geologist’s
tourney, including the women’s champ Solana Jear, the men’s champ Dave Safton
and other A division players Dell Pohlman and Brian Fyke.
Solana was a member at the Y and played in the box
league, it took a while to get her out, and I remember cracking her hand with
my racket. Oops! She was really nice, but it was a little while before we
played again. I harassed Dell and he came down to the Y, he toured me around
the court for a bit then showed me a simple volley drill, he was really
motivating and inspired me to cut everything off if I could before running
around like a crazy person. Then after months of unreturned emails, Dave Safton
finally came out to hit with me. I don’t remember actually hitting with Dave as
I couldn’t even keep up in the warm-up. Dave gave me the best advice that
anyone has ever given me, something I still think about today. He said “I’m not
a coach, if you want to get better, you should get some coaching from one of
the local pros.” He essentially told me where to go and how to get there. And that’s just what I did, I met with Ken
Cross at the UofC and proceeded to get weekly lessons. After I started lessons,
Brian Fyke organized a clinic run by Leona and Matt Grigg. This one clinic blew
my mind! I had never seen racket skills like that before and the simple things
they said like “hit the ball away from your opponent” or “get back to the T”
and “try to keep your racket ready to swing”. This is when I caught the squash bug.
First of all, the dude is a brick house, he's huge. It is remarkable how a professional athlete can pick up new skills as quickly as Z did. On court there wasn't anything to brag about yet, but Z has agreed to help our squash team get to the next level, something that I am very excited about.
Z came out for drinks with us after bootcamp and I picked his brain all night. He told me about the 88 Olympics, getting drafted by the Penguins, playing with Mario Lemieux, playing for Hartford and for the Flames then heading to Switzerland. Z also picked my brain about how I've improved at squash and our team. I told him that this is our first losing season in 4 years of playing together. Instantly, he had a solution and it was simple, it isn't easy, but its simple.
He said that I need to change the way I think. And the first thing I need to do is to be positive. My reply was that I am positive, but he said that there are ways to be more positive. He said that Mario didn't speak unless Mario had something positive to say, and not only that, but if a mistake was made, it was accepted and then he moved on. Anything negative was not allowed to linger. So lesson 1, be like Mario. Positive thinking isn't about being happy and high fives or making friends. Being positive is about understanding what you want and feeling good about the decisions you make to get there. It's about accepting that mistakes will be made, there will be set backs and we may not get what we want, and then to move on and keep at it. He spoke a lot about over thinking, and not allowing myself the opportunity to just do what I train to. We talked about focusing my energy on execution and not the process. Being positive is an all the time thing, it's about removing the things from my life that drain me emotionally. Trusting myself, taking care of myself first and it's when I am completely selfish, that's when I can start to worrying about everyone else and then be selfless. Its too easy to have someone else be the hero, and I need to step up and really trust that I am good enough. So yah, it's simple... Be positive and trust myself.
Let's see how this will play out, Zarley is a real Champion with so much to offer us. Hopefully we can help him improve his squash game too.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-68378093321529511912012-03-30T00:32:00.000-07:002012-03-30T00:32:27.719-07:00My U of A squash tourneyIt really is funny how some days you feel like you can do anything and other days you feel completely dejected, and still there are other days where you can go from high to low in an instant.
At the beginning of the month Ian, Paul and I headed up to the UofA to play a tournament. I hadn't played in a Squash Alberta sanctioned tourney in a couple months and I have been losing all my interclub matches this year as I have been spending most of time working. I wasn't expecting much so I signed up for the A division, thinking that the Open draw, although players I would normally play in a tourney was just too much to handle at this point. I was seeded 1 with my ranking of 80 something, with only one other player ranked in top 100. The draw looked relatively easy, although I had lost to 3 of my 7 competitors in the past 5 years.
My first match was against Steph's little bro, Jackson. Jackson is a solid B level player, we had never played before, except doubles with Steph and their mom. Jackson is tall and lanky and uses his reach well to make incredible gets and poke back at the ball. It was a simple game plan, to hit hard and keep the pace up to tire him out and force lots of mistakes. Game 1 went according to plan, but game 2, Jackson made less mistakes, continually forcing me to hit another ball and I became impatient going short way to early and hitting way too hard giving up really loose balls and putting myself out of position. The second game was close, but I had given up a huge lead and Jackson carried the momentum into the third. My frustration continued and I remember questioning my technique and my strategy to the point where I didn't care where I hit the ball I just wanted to hit it. Coming off the third down 2-1, Ian and Paul said that this was probly the worst squash they have seen. They suggested that I just focus on hitting dying length, and everything else would take care of itself. I was so tired even though I hadn't run that much, but realized it was the frustration in my head that was causing the poor play and the fatigue. Game 4 was all length, sure the rallies were long, but I wasn't tired anymore, and I was actually in a rhythm, so was Jackson, but the point is I had regained my confidence to swing at the ball and to step up and start volleying short. Game 4 was the longest game of the match with both of us playing much better squash but I managed to win it with a very simple gameplan. I could see in the 5th Jackson was exhausted, so without deviating too much from playing a basic length game, I tried to get on the ball fast and take the ball a bit earlier. This strategy paid off instantly as Jackson just couldn't keep up, the first point was probly the longest of the match, but every point after that got shorter and shorter as Jackson had emptied the tank. Final score was 11-3, 10-12, 11-8, 11-9, 11-1. Onto the semifinal.

I only had 4 hrs rest between matches and I had to play Gerard, someone I had a poor opinion of since losing to him in this tourney 2 or 3 years ago. But I am a much better now than I was the last time we played so I had a lot of confidence going in. I knew Gerard's backhand was going to give me a lot of free points if I could get the ball behind him, and I know he plays a physical, bump and pushoff me type game that I wanted to avoid. So the gameplan was to lull him, get him comfortable moving to same corner at a slow pace so that he forgets he has to get back to the T and then wait for a shot I could volley then follow it to the back and take an easy stroke. Normally this strategy wouldn't work against an A player, but Gerard struggles hitting consistent hard and tight on the backhand and he struggles getting outta the way. That makes for great stroke opportunities or really easy boasts to the opposite side of the court, and with the slow pace, Gerard can't build the momentum to generate physical contact with me. Gerard was caught off guard in the first, but he caught on quick in the 2nd looking to push the pace and me. He started going short early and attempting to take big swinging volleys, I believe he knocked me down twice in that game, apologizing both times, as though it was not on purpose. I started to give up a lot of ground on the T, to avoid being mowed down and to Gerards credit, he imposed his game on me. Coming off the second, I felt a little beat up, Ian and Paul reminded me that, if I took the ball earlier, and buried him in the back that he would eventually hit loose and when he did I had to be really patient, take my space and hit an easy shot to where he wasn't. Getting back on court in the third, it took a while to get it going as Gerard was swinging freely at the ball. Keep it slow and tight to the wall and get on the ball early, that's what I kept reminding myself. Gerard found himself popping up loose shots and getting stuck behind me again, this time I started imposing my pace on the ball something Gerard has a lot of trouble with because his technique is flawed. I didn't execute great, but it was enough to hold Gerard back. Paul indicated to me that, I had to toughen up a bit and play faster. It seems that if he was gonna run the diagonal, I should let him and get way outta the way, the only difference I needed was to make him sprint to the next ball. In game 4, the tactics had changed, I was now looking to play a physical game, something I initially didn't want to do. I'm comfortable playing fast as long as I am dictating play. There were a handful of collisions instigated by me going short, then volleying his hard cross courts from the front and sending the ball as well as Gerard into the back corners. He got to a few of them and replied with defensive boasts, but I kept him moving on the diagonal the entire rest of the match until he slowed down enough that I could just stand on the T and hit easy straight drop volleys. Final score was 11-6, 10-12, 11-7, 11-3.
Sunday Finals! Saturday night was a gong show, thank god I didn't play til almost 2pm. Simon had battled his way into the final, having two very tough matches on saturday. I watched his match with Jon and from what I had seen I thought he was going to play a very up tempo game. He was volleying all of Jons balls, taking the ball early in the front court and snapping hard shots in every direction. The last time Simon and I played, I believe he won, but that was 5 years ago in a C or D level tournament. My game plan was to play fast and hit early to keep him off the T and if he did volley short to get in and redrop. Well game 1 was quick, I was striking the ball as well as I ever have. Simon, was not volleying but the ball was barely making contact with his racket, he made 6 mistakes in the first 6 points and I got to 9 before he was able to win a rally, but that was the only one he won that game. Game 2 was more of the same, Simons nerves had him playing incredibly badly. In the second he took some time after he tripped and pushed me down as he tried to double back after i sent him in the wrong direction. Simon was ale to pull it together for a little while and play great squash. Unfortunately, he had invited his friends and family to watch and he knew he was playing poorly and I was playing really well. There was pressure on Simon and he made a huge push outta the gates into the 3rd and he made some very high risk (more lucky than good) shots to gain some momentum? Simon led 8-3 and that's when I stepped it up. There is magic in hitting the ball tight and to good length. The match was barely 20 minutes when Simon bumped me in third after tying the score at 8. While making my big comeback, Simon looked at me and said "dude, your not even sweating" At end I felt great, I was moving fast, hitting hard and I knew what to do. I won my 1st A tourney of 2012 and my 2nd of the season defeating Simon, 11-1,11-3,11-8.
Stringing together three wins in a row is a very nice feeling, doesn't happen too often so I'm hoping for more success in the future.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-2053190368839114592012-02-29T19:55:00.001-08:002012-02-29T19:55:04.803-08:00Book Review - Shot and a Ghost by James Willstrop (World #1)It was okay. I give it 6.5 stars...(out of 100) just kidding - out of 10 of course. I wouldn't call it a literary masterpiece, but definitely worth the read, so you can know how awesome James Willstrop is, but not in a cocky or pretentious way, seriously the dude is pretty awesome. There aren't many squash players who have taken the time write a book, so maybe this will spark some interest. Maybe Jonathon Power will write a book(yeah he's more of video guy). Or better yet Ian Power, that guy is off his rocker, or so I've heard...I've met him twice and he seemed normal, except that he drinks scotch. And if you look into his eyes, it's like the first time you listened to the beatles (on acid), just kidding - I don't listen to the beatles.
Seriously, if you're into reading autobiographies about people who have persevered through hardship, show diligence in their everyday life and are pretty much better than you are in every way... this book may inspire you. I myself could not relate to James Willstrop, but could appreciate how he has dedicated his entire life and the life of everyone around him to the game of squash. I could not however agree with his life choices - mainly to be a non-carnivore. (I am currently eating bratwurst, a very meaty chilli and some roasted chicken, oddly enough there is squash on my plate as well). I will also conduct some research and interview scienticians (dietary experts with no real education, except the local community college course on the Canadian Food Guide), and come up with the real answers on fueling your body. Just remember elephants, cows, hippos, wildabeasts and all grotesque animals are all vegetarians. Cheetahs, lions, cougars, wolves and pretty much all bad-ass predators eat meat almost exclusively. Anyhow...back to the book.
James brings us on his journey as a professional squash player touring the world, sharing stories of defeat and hardship alongside gripping play by plays against the worlds top players and some shitty players. This book gives us a very simple recipe to creating a world number 1. He could have called this book Squash Dad, Poor Dad or they could make this movie with Julia Roberts (or the English gentlemen equivalent Hugh Grant) and call it Eat Squash, Pray Squash, Love Squash. You can't help but be a bit inspired by Willstrop after reading his book, cause he really seems to be a genuine nice guy who has done all the right things and through all the turmoil found success (and continues to find success). James flashes back to moments that help build his character, some very personal stories and some that you could probly find on youtube.

What was lacking for me was the craziness and immaturity that I expect from celebrities. James compares himself to Andre Agassi which may be a bit premature. We've all been there thru the "Image is everything" times with Andre and loved him wig and wigout, we loved him thru Barbara, thru Brooke, and most especially with Steffi Graf. We love the guy because we watched him grow up from an obnoxious, cut off jeans wearing marketing ploy into a legit tennis champion. I read Open by Andre Agassi in one sitting and it took me 3 days to get thru Shot and a Ghost, which is a third the length. That is not to say, that Shot and a Ghost was boring, it's more like "I just don't relate to James". I know he isn't writing an article in the enquirer, I just want a little more. I wanna know what he did last summer, I wanna know what it is he fears and loathes, I'm not asking for his basketball diary, just a little hint of a hangover.

Anyhow, buy the book, read it and be inspired, or not.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-88478798501756458122012-02-28T16:09:00.001-08:002012-02-29T20:17:49.762-08:00Alberta Closed - Provincial ChampionshipsIt appears that I’ve neglected this blog for over a year, so what better way to start up again than by reporting on the Alberta Provincial Championships. I was lucky enough to get down to Edmonton for the weekend and watch some amazing squash matches as 16 men and 5 women competed for the Open Crowns.
Play started Friday night with 5 of the 8 mens matches going the distance. Royal Glenora Club Pro Jeff Williams was pummeling Calgarys Paul Adamiak, winning the first 2 games easily with Adamiak making flurries of mistakes. Adamiak battled back in the third and fourth by extending rallies and keeping the ball tight, making it difficult for Williams to attack and forcing him to hit the tin. The fifth game saw both players struggling to catch their breath as a composed Adamiak continued to extend rallies and Williams trying to finish them with amazing overhead shots from both wings. In the end Jeff won 11-9 in just over an hour.
Tyler Parrington and Phattaya Dhitvara both of Edmonton battled it out, Phattaya sustained an injury sometime during the fourth game, but opted to play through it only to lose the fifth easily.
Ryan Jadusingh surprised everyone by dispatching the up and coming junior and number 4 seed Graham Kerford of the Calgary Winter Club. Both players played a casual game waiting for the other to attack. The squash itself was actually quite boring to watch, entertainment came from Ryans constant commentary to himself and shouting after errant plays. This was made more apparent by the contrast in Kerfords quiet frustration, and negative body language. In the end Ryan allowed Graham to self destruct in the fifth.
Andrew Linklater of Edmonton took on another top junior from the Calgary winterclub, Neil Pohlman. Linklaters classic style and quick feet extended the rallies, while Neils sharp shots and creative strategies had Linklater flying around the court. It was anyones match with the first 4 games being decided in extra points. The fifth game saw Linklater continue to be steady, while Pohlman kept going for too much losing every rally in the fifth, 11-0 to Andrew.
In the most heated match of the tournament, Calgarys Allan Maculay battled it out with Edmonton firefighter Ray Patricio. 6’8” Maculay got more than he bargained for as Ray fought for every point in this match, literally. This was the most physical match I’ve ever seen and if there was pushing and bumping there was yelling and arguing. With both players refusing to give up any space on the T, and forcing their way into the other player, it made for an intense duel. It didn’t help that the referee was making terrible calls, allowing for this type of play to occur. On a side note – if you bump your opponent while going for the ball, you must stop and ask for a let at the time of contact. If you continue to move and attempt to hit the ball but suddenly stop and decide that it’s not gonna be a good shot, then sorry…the opportunity has passed, it’s a “NO LET”, why? cause you’re at the ball and you’re opponent is not in the way. People seem to interpret the rules to suit them and that’s total BS. Anyhow Al lost in 11-9 in the fifth and it was terrible for everyone involved, probly the worst match in the history of squash… yeah that’s a little dramatic, but seriously it was bad.
In the other 3 matches, 3rd seed 52 year old veteran Dave Safton took on 21 year old Aleem Merali, who couldn’t keep pace with Safton. Although rallies were long and fast, Dave took the majority of points with consistent play and he just watched as Aleem deteriorated. Nothing went right for Aleem, as his glasses broke after going on a 5 point run in the 3rd, only to lose the match in straight sets.
The oldest player in the tournament, Tom Bedore at almost 60 (I think? – sorry Tom), took on number 2 seed and top ranked Alberta junior Tyler Lee. Tyler played consistent, focusing on hitting clean shots, he dropped a game to Tom, but didn’t seem to mind as he came back to win the fourth game convincingly.
Top seed Grayson Witcher from Calgary took on newcomer Ibrahim Elshorafy. Grayson came out of the gates slow getting behind 3-8, only to win 11-8 and then take the next 2 with games effortlessly. Another side note – Grayson spent almost an hour warming up, stretching and getting ready for his match that lasted only 20 minutes and then spent another 30 minutes stretching and cooling down after his match.
2nd Round –
Grayson breezed thru the second round dispatching Jeff 3-0. Tyler beat Ray 3-0 as well in a swift and easy match for him. Dave Safton and Andrew Linklater played yet another terribly refereed match (seriously, where do they find these guys???), Andrew and Dave took the opportunity to showcase how bad refereeing could be, explaining many reasons to why the referees calls were wrong. Both players did however play awesome and it’s a shame that someone had to lose that, Andrew won 3-2 in an evenly contested match. Parrington beat Jadusingh 3-1, sorry I only watched a bit of it, but we probly didn’t miss that much, just kidding – but seriously.
Semi finals –
Grayson again was not challenged, showing Parrington off the court pretty quickly. Andrew however was able to take a game and made Tyler work pretty hard to claim the victory.
FINALS –
One of the most exciting finals yet! Tyler Lee came out ready to run and it looked like Grayson was content to dictate play. The points were fast with Grayson taking the ball early and sending Tyler in every direction. Tyler had no problems playing retriever and waiting for the loose ball that rarely ever came. Game one to Grayson 11-8. More of the same in the second with Gray dictating play, but there was a shift in Lees game as he started to volley and push Grayson off of the T. Looser shots off Grays racket allowed Tyler to show off his incredible racket skill at the front of the court, hitting unreturnable drop shots and devastating cross court nicks. Game to Tyler 11-5. Tyler continued to blaze, putting pressure on Grayson who appeared he wouldn’t be able to keep up with the pace of Tylers game. Grays frustration surfaced a number of times in the third as he opted to argue with the ref rather than make the effort for the ball. Game three to Lee 11-6. Again in the fourth Tyler Lee showed us why he is the best junior in the province, making amazing gets and forcing Grayson into some poor shot choices and simple errors. At 3-8 down, Grayson added some pace to his ball. Tylers racket couldn’t handle the heat of the Witcher backhand drive. Gray picked it up a notch and found another gear, and started to pound the ball relentlessly into the backcourt and Tyler couldn’t keep up. The momentum had swung back around and Gray won the fourth 11-8. Gray stuck with what was working for him and continued to send Tyler into the back corners with blinding speed. At 9-2, Grayson served only to stop play, as it appeared that Tyler had cut his knee and was bleeding. Lee left court for close to 15 minutes, while Gray was forced to try and stay warm. When Lee returned, the points were short and Gray won 11-5.
Heather Yong demolished the competition winning the ladies side.
Congrats Heather and Gray!Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-9174860883460014252011-01-24T20:18:00.000-08:002011-01-24T20:21:08.109-08:00Training AloneNobody to play?…No court…No racket…No ball...NO PROBLEM!

Go sit down. Okay, now visualize yourself on a squash court…but don’t see yourself thru your own eyes. See yourself as if you are watching from outside the court. Uh-oh, here comes your nemesis, that guy who always seems to make you work harder than anyone else. Time to warm up, so what the heck are you doing? Get that forehand side going, bounce the ball off the sidewall and strike the ball at a medium pace, remember you’re watching from outside the court. Straight length, take it off the volley, hitting is straight, a little harder now. Take a minute to visualize this in detail from outside the back glass…Stop reading and see yourself in your minds eye right now.

I said stop reading and visualize...
Ok, try it again, but wash off the back glass so you can see yourself with more clarity hitting way better shots.

Times up, so you’ve hogged warm up on the forehand side a bit, now hit a cross court. Okay, get your legs going, from the T to the front, back to the T and then back corner. Ok, he’s hit it back to you, time to warm up going for the short nick and few of these, now a nice high lob. Perfect….switch sides and do it all over again. Get that backhand side going, bounce the ball off the sidewall and strike the ball at a medium pace, remember you’re watching from outside the court. Straight length, take it off the volley, hitting is straight, a little harder now. Time to visualize so stop reading. STOP READING already and VISUALIZE!

Now clean off the glass and watch yourself again.

And once again you’ve hogged warm up on the backhand side, time to go cross court. Feetwork time, go from the T to the front, back to the T and then back corner. Cut off his crosscourt and go for the short nick and few more, now a nice high lob. Hopefully you won warmup.

If you need a break, that's okay, but the games about to start. This type of visualization is exhausting, but work your way thru warm up, to watching an entire match. It will prepare your mind for an actual match and you will find that you will have more energy during a real match. Your mind only knows what you tell it, so this type of training may even be better than actually playing. If you get good at it, you should win every point. I suggest you don't visualize losing...what's the point?

OK ready, time to play. Now watch yourself play a point out in your head. Write down a combination of shots that you will hit that set you up to continuously apply more pressure. Build yourself up, watch yourself play as many points as you can in a row, long points, short points and win every single one of them. Watch your feet, your racket, the ball, your head and push through each game and then each match all the way through a tournament.

So that's part 1. Here's part 2. Write it down.

Either between games or after your match (that you should have won) break out the pen and pencil. When did you feel strong? When did you feel frustrated? List all the positive and some negative aspects of your game. Write down at least twice as many positives. Draw a squash court on your notepad. Think back to where you felt the strongest and most confident on court and mark them on that drawing. What shots did you hit when you felt strong? What areas on the court were controlling points? Keep that drawing and recognize the areas of the court where you can attack and exploit that next time you are on court.
Another way to train alone is Self coaching – try using a mirror, it always sounds better coming from someone else.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-53842076864250437372011-01-21T21:57:00.000-08:002011-01-21T21:57:34.193-08:00This is your Brain on Squash...any Questions?Even if you're only a semi-serious squash player, being an athlete and competing in squash will sooner or later help to define how you see yourself and dictate how you feel and think. It's what you do and who you are, it's how you've committed your blood, sweat and tears, it's the investment on court that has come to shape your sense of identity. At every level in squash, from novice to professional, players will eventually come to see themselves in terms of their squash. Squash brings a player the recognition they may be lacking in other areas of their life. Your mood is often dictated by how well you played last night or an upcoming match. At the novice levels, the huge gains and initial improvement builds the ego and provides a great source of self-esteem. For competitive players, mastering new skills, overcoming challenges, attaining victory and gaining strength provides the enjoyment and satisfaction that provides them with the motivation to keep playing.

But with all the positive aspects involved with playing squash, being competitive often leaves players feeling wiped, and losing may drain one's psyche dramatically. It's the all too common squash-sob story that everyone has experienced. Losing to players who are technically and physically inferior; playing a combination of brilliant shots only to finish lazy and uninspired; focusing on all the negatives while dictating a point. The intensity of squash can be extremely taxing on the brain, leaving even the most talented players feeling burnt out, and although often euphoric may lead some players to abandon the sport. So what's the solution?

Winning squash is about controlling time. Many players use time to apply and relieve pressure - playing the ball early, slowing the game with high tosses and moving with efficiency. But many players neglect those precious moments of time between points. It's these split seconds where players allow those negative thoughts to fester and turn into devasting losses. It's those extra ticks on the clock that can be used to turn the tide of a match. I don't know what you need to tell yourself during the time between points. But if you're thinking negative thoughts between points, when will you find the time to be positive and get yourself playing your absolute best squash?

I have no idea what goes thru my mind between points, but I'll bet that if I made the effort to focus on my strengths, I would find more success and my mind would feel less fried after a match. just saying...Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-78910270373874047702010-12-06T15:17:00.000-08:002010-12-06T15:17:58.400-08:00I'm OK, you're OK.It was interesting to chat with novice to PSA players this past weekend at the Edmonton Open and find out what drives players to play this game and to gain some insight into the minds of squash players and varying levels.

Being the first tourney of the year to implement a strict rankings based seeding system, the Ed Open promised closer competition. There were a few hiccups, but essentially it did what it was supposed to. The players who were supposed to win, won and the players who were supposed to lose, lost.

At the heart of every tournament are the C and D events, where players are still motivated by huge steps in progress and improvement and although the competition aspect of squash is still keen, players are often competing against themselves and challenged by lapses in technique and strategy. Emotions still run high if not higher in these events due to frustration regarding inability and not playing better than perhaps one perceives themselves. Don't get me wrong, this happens at every level of squash, but it more prevalent at the beginning stages of a players development.

In the more practiced levels of A and B squash, there was close competition and varying degrees of disgruntled apathy towards how divisions were set. Both men's and women's divisions were led by players who could have played a division up and reared by players who could have been relegated down a division. With a handful of the players in each division using tactics unbecoming of squash players, such as pushing off, fishing for strokes, stalling for time, being belligerent and obnoxious, initiating unnessary contact and arguing with opponents and referees. It's fair to say none of these players won at any division.

At every division there were 2 common denominators of each champion, hard work and skill. Ian Laycock the winner of the Men's Open division worked hard against Nathan Hall who had as much determination to win and may be bigger, stronger and fitter than Ian, but Ian's skill level proved to be too much for Nathan. On the women's side Susie King defeated Micaala Seth who impressed with incredible shot making and quick hands and efficient movement. Micaala had Susie falling into the splits and turning the wrong way countless times, but although her skills may have been stronger, Seth couldn't keep up with King's physicality on court.

When asked what was going thru their heads, the Women's D champion was just happy to playing again and enjoyed the game for a fun way to stay fit... and of course winning always makes it more fun. The Men's C champion Gene Marshall of Calgary changed his perspective on the game after winning 3 consolation draws coming into this tourney and finally knocking out the No.1 seed in the first round. Gene's drive to come on top of 32 started with making sure that he was focused before each point. He focused on his strength of playing hard and fast and pummeling opponents into submission, he didn't get drawn into slow squash and found success in his gameplan. The Mens and Ladies B champions were both juniors, focused and arrogant, listening to music and arguing with refs. They focused on just playing simple clean up and down the wall classic junior style squash, no mistakes keep the ball in play and force the opponent to go for too much...boring!!!!

Allan took the Men's A and his focus was to win every point. Thea won the ladies A and again a classically trained player with decent shots and fitness.

In the PSA, Shawn Delierre definately drew energy from the crowd and was loving every minute of it. He mentioned after the match that, when he got down or felt drained after losing a rally or even during a point where he was getting worked, he tried to remind himself that he loves this game and by convincing himself that he enjoyed the exhaustion and abuse of making another get, it made it easier to keep going and ultimately win the PSA title.

For me, I had a great first match with Aleem, I may have still been drunk, but we had fun. My second match not so much fun, but I played well so I was happy. My third match was awesome, most fun I've had on court in a long time.

So there you have it, play to win, play for fun or both, it's really up to you, but consider that if you play to win and you have to move up a division, it may be a while before you remember why you play.
I haven't proofed this post so it probly makes no sense. I may revise it.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-23359357753408446782010-11-19T12:02:00.000-08:002010-11-19T12:02:14.209-08:00Updated Rankings 2010-2011
Rankings were reposted again this month with some corrections, rankings will likely change again in the next few weeks. Squash Alberta is continuously updating the rankings and there were a tonne of corrections from inaccurate results reported from tournaments and league play in the first few months of the season.
Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-78844027846284840982010-11-16T09:12:00.001-08:002010-11-16T09:12:24.063-08:00Clarity and MotivationFailure is often more subtle than you think. In the short term you may not appear to be failing. You drift from one day to the next, repeating your errors, making bad decisions, listening to the wrong people and making the wrong choices. You constantly dream of this blurred vision of yourself doing remarkable things, that somehow, someday everything will just fall into place.

You can choose to meander thru life and eventually fail, or you can voluntarily change the way you think about squash. We all fall into those rutts where motivation to play squash is low. Being inspired to get on court and work your ass off every time you get outta bed is not something that may happen automatically.

Part of the frustration that comes with squash is the inability to clearly see your goals. Too much effort is wasted scrammbling in the cloudiness of what you think you want to do. Take the time to visualize and clearly define what you hope to achieve. See it in your minds eye as clearly as you can visulaize your hand working your mouse. See the same thing for hitting your backhand or drop shot or volleying a figure 8. If your not sure what it's supposed to look like, go on youtube and watch the pros, or go watch some open players at your club. Remember what you see and play it back in your head and exchange your face on theirs.

I have no answer to cure low motivation, but I’ve compiled some super cheezy, somewhat squash related quotes from sources I can’t remember, so apologies to those I haven’t referenced. I hope this helps to motivate you.

“Go from being interested to being committed. That’s when you become unstoppable.”
“Straight back, straight forward, press the ball, hit down, not up.”
“Write down a goal and the reasons why. Visualize it.”
“Enjoy Right Now!”
“Always do more than you think you can.”
“The mind only knows what you tell it.”
“Control your breath to Control your mind to Control your body to Control the ball to Control the Game.”
“Change how you think to Change how you feel to Change how you live.”
“Bite off more than you can chew…and chew the hell out of it.”
“Always take it too far, to learn how far you can go.”
“Work without fear of punishment. Work without hope for reward.”
“Mental toughness is consistency of effort.”
“The sign on the door to success says “PUSH”.”
“Effort breeds Momentum.”
“Straight, straight, straight, straight…. Straight, straight, straight.”
“When it’s loose, hit the right shot.”
“Press the ball to the target.”
“Gauge your footwork, vision, hitting straight, consistency…and focus on right now.”
“Make each day a chance to improve.”
“Focus on the things you can control.”

I'm told that eventually you will get to a state of mind where visualization becomes effortless and then serves to become an infinite source of motivation. Go ahead and prove me wrong.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-37428079466288031622010-09-27T12:31:00.000-07:002010-09-27T12:46:45.889-07:00Fit Plus ResultsThanks to Peter Schwartz for organizing another great tournament with lots of awesome squash played this weekend. Allan Macaulay won his first A tournament ever defeating youngster Cale Williams in a grueling 5 set battle. Allan defeated Ciaran Godfrey is his semi-final and myself in the quarters, both 3-0. Cale played solid against Fabio DeStefani in his semi winning 3-1 and beating Kelsey Souchereau in 3 in his quarter final. Ciaran claimed 3rd place after Fabio withdrew due to injury during his semifinal.

On the consolation side, Clyde Dickey came back from 2 games down to defeat me in 5. Clyde played a steady game the entire match and I sustained an injury to my elbow after winning the second that had me struggling to hold onto my racket. Clyde defeated Jack Hoogstraten and I beat Daryl Lindsay to get to the consolation final.

Some players got as many as 6 matches in this weekend and I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't move one appendage or another. Congratulations to everyone who participated.

The University of Calgary Squash Tourney starts on Friday this week and if you're keen to play the deadline to sign up is today.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-31465867216056615622010-09-24T09:27:00.001-07:002010-09-24T09:54:41.351-07:00Fit Plus Men's TournamentWith 21 players in the Men's A/Open draw, anyone can take the championship belt. Early favorites are World Health Club's Allan Macaulay and Cale Williams who have already moved onto the quarter-finals. The 4 players winning their first round to get into the round of 16 include myself, Ciaran Godfrey, Andrew Gilbert and Glen Handley.

Glen played a determined Rick Gray who hits the ball low and hard. Glen's backboard style and athleticism extended points long enough for Rick to force shots and make errors. Glen won 3-1 and faces number 2 seed Fabio DeStefani in his next round.

Andrew Gilbert had a shaky start agains lefty Mike Hiller. Mike's penetrating length dominated Andrew as he walked over him in the first 2 games. Andrew attempted to extend rallies, but Mike continued to hit the ball past Andrew time and time again. Andrew collected himself after losing the 2nd and completely changed his gameplan, looking to go short and force Mike to move off the T. With a new strategy, Andrew began to dominate play as he roared back to win 11-9 in the 5th. Andrew moves on to play unknown Micaala Seth.

Ciaran Godfrey started his tourney against veteran Greg Henderson who tried to extend rallies long enough for Ciaran to find the tin. Greg put up a good fight losing one game in extra points and surprisingly taking a game off Eau Claire's top ranked player. But Ciaran was too much for Greg in the fourth as his blistering pace made most of his shots unreturable. Ciaran now faces Medicine Hat's Todd Christianson.

In a re-match of our first round last year, I was given the opportunity to redeem myself against Jeff Schneider (who beat me in 5 last year). The gameplan was to extend points and tire out Jeff as I know he hasn't played a lot this summer. I took the first game 11-8. After coming off court and getting some sound coaching, I kept my racket up and looked to go short on loose balls and play high crosscourt lobs on low drives. I took the second 11-2. I continued with this strategy and finished strong 11-3. My next match will pit me against hard hitting Larry Laine.

There are still lots of matches left to be played, including much anticipated Kelsey Souchereau who will play Reg Munro later today. Stay tuned for more updates on the Fit Plus Men's Tournament.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-83047056732349785992010-09-20T09:20:00.000-07:002010-09-20T10:01:58.050-07:00Inside the mind of a ChampionHaving spent the weekend attached at the hip of Ian Laycock, it was a little more than interesting peering into the thought processes that occur into the heavy favorite of a tournament. Having been the number 1 seed in lower division tournaments, I thought that perhaps I would be able to relate.

Before Ian's first match against his uncle Ian B., Ian had driven 3 hours after a full day of physical fire fighter training in Vermillion. It was obvious that he was tired and may have been coming down with a cold. His uncle had to play a match earlier that day and was already feeling a bit wiped. Ian took this match to get a good warm up in and practice his shots, establish his length and focus on his court movement. He said he was feeling a bit tired so didn't want to be on court too long, but wanted to ensure his uncle got a good hit in. Ian followed up the match with a nice long steam, we went and had a few beers and some popcorn(kitchen was closed) at the bar and went back to Sherwood Park. Ian had a neo-citran and went to bed by 1am.

Saturday morning, Ian had to run to school and get some stuff done before playing his match with Andrew Linklater. Andrew is a solid player and Ian said he was just gonna try and play fast and get off court quickly. Ian was a bit nervous and he was suffering from a runny nose but took the first 2 games easily. Andrew knew he was outgunned, but still tried to extend rallies. Ian said he was feeling impatient and his length was horrible, but he was gonna try and go short and win points faster in the 3rd which he lost in a close one. The 4th game saw more of the same, but Ian's length improved which set up better opportunites to go short. Andrew was able to get some shots going and moved Ian around, but he couldn't sustain the pace of play. Ian did not appear to break a sweat in this game. We went for a steam afterwards and then off to chinese food for lunch. We didn't overeat but it was decent portion, noodles and shrimp. Ian popped a couple advil extra strength gel caps about an hour before his match with Jeff Williams cause he was feeling a bit sore.

Ian went for a steam again before his match with Jeff as his runny nose continued. He seemed more concerned with finishing his match so he could come coach me, reminding me to get a good warm up in, keep my racket up and concentrate on my feetwork. Jeff looked relaxed as he had already conceeded the match in his mind. I bet Ian $50 that he couldn't make Jeff vomit on court. Unfortunately, Jeff was trying to shoot for winners the entire match which prevented any long rallies and made for another quick dispatching for Ian. Ian was a bit annoyed but was able to catch (what could have been the end of) my match just in time to coach me to a comeback and take it 5 whil Phil.

Ian stretched it out a bit and went for another steam. We went up to the bar again and hung out with the gang. Ian and his uncle split a pizza and a few beers. Ian talked on the phone with his gf most of the time and we made an early night again and watched a movie at home. We woke up early and ate blueberry pancakes and pineapple and watched some forrest gump.

I asked Ian the game plan and he said he was gonna demolish Elliot as fast as he could. He was gonna get on the ball fast and keep him moving. Elliot looked pretty sore in the warm up as his semi-final went 5 and he won on a stroke. But Ian looked composed and was pounding the ball and moving well. The first few rallies of the first were long and exciting, but if you blinked, you woulda missed the match. It only took the first 4 points before Ian ran away with it. Elliot seemed to be frozen as Ian literally just hit the ball past him point after point. This was Ian shortest match of the tourney. Ian later said that he was annoyed that Elliot didn't make a match of it and that made him rush more than he wanted which caused the handful of mistakes that Ian made in each game. We went back to the bar and had lunch with Ray and Phil then off to the mall. We went and watched the Town, then had a BBQ in the rain. We chatted on Skype with some family and checked out the draw for next weeks tourney. Then off to bed.

Yeah, not as glamorous as you might think! But it was awesome for me to have that in my corner.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-30387107879770505112010-09-19T19:44:00.000-07:002010-09-20T07:25:59.455-07:00Royal Glenora Season OpenerEdmonton's Royal Glenora club hosted Alberta's first tournament of the season and brought close to a hundred players out of hibernation this past weekend. As only 7 players registered for men's open, club pro Jeff Williams opted for a combined Open/A division with close to 2 dozen players. I drove up with WCP's James Jelenski and met 2 of my Calgary buddies including Eau Claire teammate Paul Adamiak and good friend and team Alberta member Ian Laycock. The draw was fierce, with brother's Andrew and Elliot Linklater, former pro basketballer Phil Scherer, firefighter Ray Patricio, veteran Tom Bedore and a number of keen players all looking to move up in the Alberta rankings. Here is a breakdown of our weekend. With the combined draw, it was a reasonable goal to get into the top 8 and play as well as I could against the top 7 seeded players.

James had to play new A player TJ Townsend in the first round and was surprised by the unorthodox swing and movement and struggled through the first 4 games until TJ ran outta steam in the 5th and James ran away with it. James' second match was against number 4 seed and club pro Jeff Williams who dominated James from the word go. Jeff won a trip to the semifinal against Top seeded Ian Laycock who made easy work of Jeff. James was knocked outta the tourney by Ryan Jadusingh in another close one.

Paul played a streaky game with Andrew Linklater, winning and losing numerous points in a fast pace and exciting match. Andrew's consistency won out in the end as Paul found the tin too many times with higher risk shots. Andrew took the match in 4. Paul moved to the consolation side where he met up against a determined Ian Buchanan (who was nice enough to let me stay with him this weekend). The match was in question the entire time and Paul struggled to keep the ball above the tin and Ian seemed to find the nick everytime he went short. Paul battled hard in the 5th to come back from 10-7 down to win it in extra points.

My first match was against Scott Anderson. With my tennis elbow, I didn't expect a lot and I was struggling with my swing. Scott ran down a lot of balls but was unable to put the ball away on me as I kept the pace slow, and in the end, my superior fitness was enough to force Scott into flurries of mistakes. I took the first 2 games easily 11-7, 11-5 and dropped the third quickly 11-3 but came back in the 4th winning 11-6. Consistency was key as I couldn't put any extra pace on the ball and Scott attempted to force the issue finding the tin and putting himself outta position too many times. The Saturday match against number 2 seed Elliot Linklater was a total walkover as I struggled to hit the ball and sharp pains in the forearm and elbow prevented any focus for me. I lost in 3 and went straight to the pharmacy for painkillers. I played again in the evening against number 3 seed, Phil Scherer conceding the first 2 games and getting down 7-10 in the third before the advil kicked in I was able to battle back and win the 3rd in extra points. I dominated the 4th game as Phil didn't know what hit him winning 11-5. With a semifinal playing on the court beside us, there was a bit of a delay for game 5 and thus another swing in momentum. Phil came out hitting a miss hit off my serve that somehow found the crosscourt nick. The second point I dominated with Phil looking like he was going to run outta steam and after reaching for a backhand the ball squeezed off the tip of his racket and the boast found yet another nick. Phil's next serve just cleared the top line and dropped in to find the backwall nick. Down 3-0 off 3 nicks, my heart sank into my stomach, but I tried to keep pace going point for point until the end, but couldn't break back that extra point. As the game extended the crowd from the semi-final all found their away over and cheers sounded from outside the court. I picked up the intensity of my footwork, taking the ball earlier and mixing up pace with slow floaty lobs that kept Phil off balance. Phil opted to play the roll of backboard as I worked him up front with fast boasts and forced him to reach high to volley with the slow matrix style lobs. Rallies were long and exciting and mistakes were few and far between as each player was looking to win points by out positioning the other. Phil won a few points with some hard hitting swings into the nick and Domi caught Phil going for a bit too much a couple times taking the stroke. But in the end, Phil found that hard drive cross court into the nick taking it 11-9 in the 5th. Phil went on to lose to Ray Patricio in the cons final.

Ian's first round was against his uncle Ian who did all he could keep the ball in play but eventually fell 3-0. Ian followed up with a second round against Andrew Linklater in what would be his toughest match of the tourney, winning in 4. Andrew played a solid tight and disciplined game, but Ian's pace was too much for Andrew forcing him to chase down ball after ball until Andrew couldn't chase anymore. Ian dispatched Jeff Williams in 3 in the semi-final and spent more time warming up demolishing Elliot in the final 3-0.

Overall a fun weekend. Losing to the number 2 and 3 seeds, but finishing tied for 7th, goal achieved!Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-77812743778438551682010-09-15T20:33:00.001-07:002010-09-15T21:03:03.480-07:00Prolotherapy - Round ThreeAfter suffering for the last couple months with minor tennis elbow, last night was the straw that broke the camel's back...or in my case - elbow. Without any grip strength, I would say that it is almost impossible to create tension in the forearm. Tennis elbow has got to be the most excruciating ailment I've experienced. It started with just a lingering ache in my forearm, I got it massaged, I got some crazy chinese herbal patches, active release, physiotherapy. Doctors all recommended that I just stop playing squash for a couple months to allow the tendons to heal....yeah right.

I thought it would go away, tried wearing a tension band around my tricep and forearm, but it wasn't the same. My arm was weak, my hand was flimsy and my elbow caused me unbelievable pain. Ice was a temporary solution, but as soon as it got warm the irritation would start back up. Playing horribly the last couple days I decided that I need to get this fixed...NOW.

I went to the naturopath that injected my ankles with prolotherapy solution a year ago. My ankles have never been the same, by the way. They are stronger than ever, no clicking sounds, no ankle braces, just reinforced ligaments and tendons that provide me with confidence moving around court. I've actually felt my foot turn over while moving on court and the ligament supporting my dynamic weight and not stretching or tearing. So even though I knew I would have to suffer through the injections into my elbow joint (it was almost 60 injections into both ankles in 2 sessions)and then the days of soreness that would follow, I felt that it was worth the risk.

At lunchtime today I walked over to Dr.Mike Hoffman without appointment and forced him to inject my elbow and provide an instant remedy for this debilitating injury. I could barely shake his hand and even the smallest poke at my elbow made me want to cry. The initial injection was right into the most painful bony process where the tendon attached my muscle to my joint. The stabbing pain was followed by a pressurized sensation as the fluid was injected...then euphoria. The procaine in the solution numbed my elbow, then my forearm and 8 injections later, I was relieved from my pain!!!

I went back to work and things were solid, I was excited to go up to Edmonton this weekend and play a tournament. I remember thinking that my arm still feels a bit weak, but at least there is no pain. But it creeped up on me, I could start to feel a tingling in my elbow about an hour after being injected. The tingling turned into throbbing and I eventually went home cause the pain had not only increased substantially, but prevented me from being able to concentrate. By the time I got home, I could barely move my arm...I knew this would happen and I'm currently dealing. I've temporarily become left handed as the swelling in my elbow has limited it's use. It's the irritation of the tendons that initiates the bodies healing process, so anti-inflammatory drugs would counteract the therapy.

This time tomorrow I should be fine, better than new even. I hope that I can endure as the healing process is almost unbearable...thank god for belvedere. A nice 2 day rest prior to tournament play is a great thing and promises to provide me with fresh legs, a fresh elbow and a fresh disposition for the Royal Glenora Season Opener on Friday. (but seriously - my elbow feels f'd up!)Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6396744520620941458.post-8435620835082016732010-09-15T08:22:00.000-07:002010-09-15T09:01:35.232-07:00Interclub - First MatchOur Eau Claire YMCA men's team suffered our first team loss since 2008. Newcomer Andrew Gilbert hit the court first and came out a little flat against World Health's Amir Khalid. The ball was hot last night but both players insisted on taking big cuts at the ball and forcing lots of errant shots from the opponents. Andrew eventually found his feet and kept the ball tight and controlled up and down the walls and volleying short forcing Amir to run down a lot of balls. Andrew controlled most of the rallies but was challenged by Amir who refused to give up on any ball. Andrew grinded out a tough win in 5 games. Team Captain Domi Diaz also played a tough Match against World Health Captain Glen Handley. Lots of loose rallies extended this game to over 75 minutes. With lots of bumping and playing through, it was apparent that both players were struggling to control the ball. Both players suffered mental lapses throughout the match, each dropping a game scoring less than 6 points. Down 2-12, Glen served the ball directly into the floor inspiring a mental lapse in Domi (who couldn't stop laughing), Glen scored the next 2 points before Domi regained composure and took the 2nd game easily. The final 2 games went to extra points and eventually Domi lobbed the ball outta bounds in the fifth. Eau Claire number one, Trevor Slaughter put up a tough match against 6 foot 7 Allan Maculay, extending rallies with blistering cross courts but stuggled to get around Allan resulting in lots of lets called and arguments with the referee. Trevor changed up the strategy in the third working Allan to the front court and found more success than trying to move him to the backcourt but came up short, losing in 3. Top ranked Ciaran Godfrey battled Craig Smith another 5 setter. Ciaran stuck to his game plan of striking the ball hard and low and keeping Craig off balance. Craig capitalized on the flurries of mistakes made by Eau Claire's top ranked player. Ciaran dictated play the entire match giving and taking points from the scrambling world health player. Eventually Ciaran's pace was too much for Craig as Ciaran dominated the 5th game. World Health may have taken home the extra point, but after moving up a division from last year, Eau Claire sends out a message that we can run with the big boys. Our next match will take place in 2 weeks at the Glencoe Club at 7pm.Domihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14458681060243819731noreply@blogger.com0
